Cake Pops!

I decided to join in on the Wilton Pops in a Post Contest as soon as I heard about it. I’ve always wanted to try making cake pops, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity. I was even lucky enough to be one of the first 40 people to register, and wilton send me a large box full of cake pop supplies.

My sister was staying with us while my husband was out of town, so we took that opportunity to make them. We decided to use red velvet cake mix and cream cheese frosting. We followed the directions in this book (included in my kit). The directions were easy to follow, and the decorating ideas are phenomenal. I only wish I were that creative!

Here’s what the cake looked like while we were crumbling it:

Then we added the frosting and formed them into balls/ovals:

and while they were chilling, I started melting the candy melts (we used red). I used the Chocolate Pro Electric Melter, and it was fabulous!

Then we used the melted candy to help with the sticks, and let them chill again.

when they were chilled, we started dipping them. I think I need to work on my melting technique though, because the candy was REALLY runny and made a big mess.

We started out using theĀ pops decorating stand, but quickly abandoned it, both because it was running all over and because we had a lot of trouble getting the stand to stay put together. I think, next time, I’ll cover some floral foam with parchment paper and try that. So we ended up just setting them on the parchment paper to dry:

We were trying to make them look like Muno, from Yo Gabba Gabba, so we added the candy eyes and I used black royal icing to make mouths. Obviously, I am not very artistic, because they’re kind of scary looking Munos.

They do taste delicious though. I can’t wait to try them again. Practice makes perfect, right?
